I discovered something here the other night. After waking at 6am to photograph the early morning light and not stopping work until 9pm that evening the writer and I decided it was time for a break, a cocktail was in order. We settled on gin and tonics; one of my favorite drinks.
My first sip was a big surprise too. The tonic water here is much sweeter than the Schweppes I get in the states.
Croatia caries the same brand too.
It’s different in the way that Mexican Coca-Cola taste different in Mexico than in the states.
My guess is the tonic here is sweetened with real sugarcane and not high fructose corn syrup which makes for a
sweeter more smooth taste.
I never knew tonic could be this good.
So basically after a long day on assignment working, I’m having the best G&T’s I’ve ever had, ever.
It was a nice little nuanced discovery I had to share.

Sippin’ Gin and Croatian Tonic

I had the same revelation about soda in Europe, and I’m not a big soda drinker. Especially loved the grape soda (I think under the Welch’s brand?) so when I got back to NY I wanted to share my discovery with my loved ones: horrible, terrible difference in taste.
Well, have a great time and enjoy what Croatia has to offer.
In Europe also sugar made out of sugar beet is sometimes used as sweetener in the soft drinks. I live in Switzerland and the tonic I know is indeed rather sweet. In France I have seen people order a Schweppes tonic as a non-alcoholic soft drink…I was quite surprised…but it is great with gin.
Absolutely. I long for the tonic I used to drink in Ireland which was like what you describe. (I believe there were also two types – Indian as you show (and regular). I would also love it if we could purchase in North America the mini cans and bottles (perfect for one drink) they have in Europe
